Kamadaishido is a Buddhist temple that is Temple 69 of the Kazahaya 88 Pilgrimage (風早八十八ヶ所). Kazahaya is the historical name of the city around Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture. The Kazahaya 88 Pilgrimage was established in the early Meiji Era (1868 - 1912), by connected Yakushi and Jizo Temples in the area, in order to accommodate pilgrims who could not complete the Shikoku Pilgrimage.

The temple is located in the middle of the city of Matsuyama. It worships and houses a statue of Kobo Daishi, the Buddhist who founded the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said that the statue was crafted by a grass sickle (kama in Japanese, which the temple is named after). It was enshrined at this location to pray for the healing of sickness, as Kobo Daishi had done in his lifetime. The temple also maintains a clean and quaint hut, sometimes with refreshments for pilgrims.

How are walking times calculated?
Walking times are estimated with a modified approach to Naismith’s rule to account for elevation gains/losses and other practical considerations that require a more conservative bias. The basis of our calculations assumes a speed of 4 kilometers per hour on flat land. Learn more here.
