Sumotoriya, which draws its name from its founder’s interest in sumo wrestling, has been dealing in pilgrimage and Buddhist goods for over 130 years. The shop is one of the oldest stores in Shikoku that carries products for pilgrims.
One can find Sumotoriya on the approach to Kirihataji Temple (#10). It boasts reasonable prices and a wide selection of goods, and is regularly patronized by veteran pilgrims and Buddhist monks alike. Sumotoriya also ships pilgrimage supplies internationally – for overseas inquiries, one should contact them directly.
Sumotoriya is a certified Tourist Information Center (TIC), authorized by the Japan National Tourism Organization. The owner worked for the JNTO in the past and speaks excellent English. He invites pilgrims to drop by and freely ask any questions they may have about travel, safety, or suggestions in Shikoku. Be sure to say hello!
When you are in Shikoku, Sumotoriya can’t be missed. We recommend it as a point of interest on your pilgrimage.
